I am drawn to exploring what places mean to us, both personally and culturally. Landscapes are physical places, of course, but they are also repositories for our myths and memories. A pink sunrise at low tide, dusk settling in as kids toast marshmallows on the beach, a dinner bell, music traveling across the water. Lived or imagined, nostalgia is sometimes comforting, sometimes sad, sometimes as enveloping as fog.
I also think about my work in dialogue with its viewers. Life can feel busy and separated from nature’s rhythms. Our ties to technology and the pace of change can be overwhelming. My work aims to be a respite from that – for the compositions to be a break from clutter, and the colors to evoke peace and delight. I want each of us to be able to retrieve the story we need from the canvas.
